Wooden fences have been used on many types of properties for probably as long as humans have owned and held land. Of course, wooden fences have come a long way. Even in the last couple of decades, wood fences technology has evolved. For example, modern woods are specially treated and tempered to be even stronger, longer-lasting, and more reliable. Because of such advancements, wood can be used in pretty much any habitable climate. But, when it comes down to it, most homeowners are going to choose wooden fencing simply because of the way that it looks. Wood has a highly desirable, authentic, and natural look that can add class to any property.

There Are Now Composite Wood Options

Since so many people love the look of wood, there are now more composite options to choose from. These are made up of wood byproducts and other materials (like plastics and epoxies) that make the surface more waterproof than real wood. This can be very useful on a fence, which is outside and exposed to all the elements every single day. For the most part, composite wood products look very realistic. They have highly detailed finishes and textures that look very similar to real wood. But purists will tell you that there is nothing better than real wood. There's just no substitute.

Is Owning A Wood Fence Hard?

So, if you prefer the look of real wood, the first thing you need to do is figure out if you are going to be able to handle the necessary upkeep. If you have a wooden fence, it will probably be cedar, redwood, pine, or another affordable and reliable species. These are woods that are relatively weatherproof and water-resistant. That being said, even these materials will rely heavily on the sealant to protect the wood. The sealant should last several years without needing to be treated or reapplied in any way. For example, your fence might need to be refinished every 5 years if you want to prevent fading or the forming of a patine. But, if you like the look or an older, aged fence, then you can probably let go for up to 10 years without needing to worry about any structural issues. That being said, you do have to keep an eye out for rodents and termites that could eat away at your wood.

All in all, wooden fences aren't that hard to take care of. If you are willing to handle the maintenance, wood is a great fence material.
